Evening folks!

I’d like to address something that I’ve been hearing so much about…and really take issue with. It’s something that I’ve been struggling with since I heard the news and since people have started jumping on the Facebook bandwagon to immediately badmouth and destroy.

Leave Kim Kardashian alone. Please. Just…please.

She had 72 days of marriage bliss and I’m sure she made the most of it…learning to live and love – monogamously – for just over two months, before having the make the hardest decision of her young, incredibly talented life. Unfortunately “irreconcilable differences” came between the couple. Those facts were stated by the lawyers, as we know that Kim hasn’t the capability to use words like “irreconcilable” let alone “differences”…and so what? She’s street smart, or at least ‘cul-de-sac smart’. She doesn’t need the brains of celebrity intellects like Paris Hilton or ‘The Situation’. She knows what she’s doing. So leave her alone. Please. Just…please.

People say that Kim isn’t like the rest of us. They say she has lost touch with the lower and middle class. Well those people are wrong. Plain wrong. She had to struggle through life like the rest of us. Growing up in California with parents that could barely afford to pay their personal trainer overtime. Thankfully, hardships of school were nowhere to be found for Kim, as conveniently when she was 12 years old and starting Junior High, Sir Mix-A-Lot released the hit single ‘Baby got Back’.

Kim had to work hard to get where she is now. Who of you would make the sacrifices that Kim has made? How many of you would work as hard as she did to get fame? How many of you would have the courage to skank your way to have sex with a famous rapper, film it and leak it for publicity? How many of you would say yes to a pointless, brain draining and absolute dramatic waste of both money and pride TV show based on the lives of people with literally no lives? How many of you? None of you. That’s who. So leave her alone. Please. Just…please.

Kim HAD to spend the money she did on her wedding. Not because of love, because her fans expected her to! I’d be absolutely horrified if I ever saw Kim shopping for herself. People say that Kim doesn’t do anything for charity. WRONG! She modelled for a charity once. So there. SO THERE! She earned her money honestly, through porn and reality TV. So she spent her money honestly on her wedding…the most lavish wedding she could possibly have. Because fuck knows she’s not being outdone by the Royal Family. I’m behind her 100%. Leave her alone.

As a die-hard fan of all of the Kardashians (the official plural of which is ‘a trainwreck of kardashians’), I support Kim in her hardship. I will join the masses on her Mytwitface account paying her respect and well wishing her in her time of need, sending messages along with her followers like this one… “Nooooo!!! They made such a great couple. Hoping they both can find love again in this crazy world.” It is a crazy world…because of you. Haters.

So please, leave Kim alone. Think before you post…because you don’t know her like I do.

Vocals start tomorrow!!!

I’ll give you all an album update then!

Peace and love.

Steve

Oh how I’ve missed you cats! A big ‘Hello’ to everyone out there in the world of interwebbage…or should I kick it off right with an…

Evening folks!

Where to start, where to start. I’ve got stories and rants coming out the wazzoo. (whatever a wazzoo is.) (butt.)

Firstly on a personal note, I got married last month! Look…I saved myself for you as long as I could, but you kept me waiting for too long. So many nights by the phone waiting for you to call, standing in the rain outside your window hoping for a glimpse of you through your curtain…potentially in your unspeakables. Too many times did the candle burn out at the dinner table, sitting with no company other than my beast of a cat. So I grabbed the first gal I saw and married the pants off of her! It’s working out pretty well so far…she likes the way that I look in sunglasses – so at least we have one thing in common. For any of you that have my personal Facebook page, there are a whack of photos up there and heaps more to come as well.

I decided against the traditional kiwi ‘Honeymoon in Dunedin’…so I went to Vegas instead. “What? I didn’t hear you right…did you say VEGAS?” you say. “Yep.” I reply. In one word, the honeymoon was ‘freakinginsanelyawesomeinlikethecoolestwayeveranditwassweetaswellbutmostlyawesomewithhintsofsweetsprinkledonitlikethetopofadonut’. See what I did there? One word, but it’s like a sentence? Clever.

I was in Vegas for six days. To be blunt, I was ready to pack it in after two. Seriously…that town either makes or breaks you – and I was a broken man. Thankfully not because of gambling, (I actually doubled my money, but I’ll get onto that one later) it’s just a hell of a place to get used to. 40 degree heat at 3am, people EVERYWHERE Sweaty, smelly, large people rubbing sensually against you as you stand in line for a soft pretzel. It was the afternoon of my second day there – I was hot, I was dirty, I’d just been asked if Jesus had found me by a cross dressing man by the name of ‘Kandy Kane’, dressed in a glittery pink bikini top, barely holding his (impressive) man-boobs in. I had no accommodation booked for the remainder of my stay and the bank account was disappearing faster than the g-string down the crack of ‘Ms Kane’.

Then I found them…my oasis in the desert…the answer to all of my problems.

Margaritas.

Ohhhh baby! Once I stopped giving a hoot…Vegas made sense, and I owned it. I stayed in a hotel called the Luxor, which is essentially, for lack of better terms…a F**KING PYRAMID! Seriously, look it up. It was incredible. Went and saw Criss Angel’s show which was mean. The guy is a demon. Like…in this one trick, he was here and then…he was there. Wow…that’s not that impressive written out. Let me try that again.

First he was here. Then he was…

*POOF*

THERE!

Ooooohhhhhhh magic.

So, yeah…did a bunch of shows, went to a whole heap of clubs and bars, which to be honest is really out of character for me. I am not a clubber. In any, way shape nor form. However, this was different…because I had my new friend Margarita helping me out. I tore up dance-floors. Seriously. Have you ever seen that program ‘So You think You Can Dance’? Oh, you have? …so, you know that guy who auditions and he’s really bad, but he’s trying really hard – so at the end of it all you’re like, ‘well he was horrible, but he had the right attitude…I hope he gets the pity vote’. That was me. The entire You Ess of Aye was watching me pull moves that would make your ‘just a little bit too drunk Uncle’ look like the Lord of the Flipping Dance. It was awesome.

So yeah…it’s been a pretty full on couple of months recently. There’s probably a bunch more stuff about the States I can rattle on about, but really I’m either too tired or my brain has locked it out for the time being. Tell you what…if you’ve got anything you want to hear about – or questions…send me an email or comment. Happy to oblige. More than happy. Too happy to be honest. Like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. Too happy. The guy was a chimney sweep. No way that’s a happy job. Too happy. I mean, he’s up chimneys all day. Like…inside the things…all covered in soot and crap. Have you ever had soot on your hands? Try brushing that stuff off? Damn near impossible…too happy.

SOOOOOO! We’ve been busy as a flock of beavers (flock? what’s the collective for beaver?) working on songs for the new album. After checking, the collective term for beaver is either colony or family. I’m glad we cleared that up. We’ve got a whole heap of new tracks that have popped up over the last few weeks, just putting some finishing touches here and there between now and October, where we pack up and ship out to the Gold Coast to record the thing!!! I honestly can’t wait to show you guys what we’ve got. The finished product can’t come soon enough.

I’ll tell you what. I’ll try and make this blog thing a regular doohickey again – try and build that family momentum back up. Over the next few days I’ll do a write up of how the writing process has been going and what we’ve got planned for when we’re over in Aussie for you guys – because we’ve got some really cool ideas for ways to keep everyone in the loop with what we’re doing.

So, until next time.

This is me, signing off.

Peace and love.

Afternoon folks!

Mr Christopher Treeby and I are sitting in an internet cafe on Courtney Place in lovely Wellington city, while the rest of the crew are at the movies.

Today we have the day off before we jump a plane to Christchurch this evening for tomorrow nights show at CBS. We awoke this morning, misty eyed and clouded thoughts after one hell of an evening that followed the show…Jagermeister plus Jagermeister times Jagermeister equals a group hangover. Hell, it was worth it though…what an incredible night.

I got a chance to watch all of the bands from start to finish last night.

As I Lay Dying are phenomenal. To say the least. I’ve heard and dig their albums…but to see that live was an eye opener. So tight…so heavy and just an inspiring performance. Trivium are just machines. Such an incredibly tight show…blew my mind. We watched Disturbed from side of stage last night with the guys from the other bands, so close the pyros were singeing the brows. It was truly epic.

Who was left after the pack down last night ended up at a bar near the venue singing Bon Jovi and Rick Astley covers. You could tell the end of the night was near when the bar put on Wonderwall, followed by Champagne Supernova. That was a party closer. We all stumbled back into our accom about 4am and powered through a couple hours sleep before we had to check out and hit the streets today. Christchurch, I hope your beds are comfortable and your showers are hot. That would be super.

We’ll see you tomorrow Christchurch. I can’t wait to get back down there.

This is me, signing off.

Peace and love.

Afternoon Folks!

Sheesh, it’s been a while hasn’t it?! First off, thanks to everyone for reading all my daily rants and comments over the past few months. I kind of made the decision in the last couple of them to space them out for when I actually have something to say…other than having a go at spandex wearing cyclists! Hmmm?

So, now…I have something to say.

We played Vector Arena in Auckland last night for the first show of the NZ leg of Disturbed’s ‘Music As A Weapon’ tour. I’ve been thinking about how to describe it in one word, or even a sentence…but it just can’t be done. So, here comes the ramble!!!

To walk out onto that stage, as the opening act to such an amazing reception sent shivers down my spine. Not bad ones. Not bad ones at all. What happened between when we started to when we finished was a blur, but man…it felt good afterwards. Auckland was incredible to really narrow it down, and it was amazing meeting people outside afterwards.

Probably one of the biggest lineups around – Disturbed, Trivium and As I Lay Dying. Every band put on such a wicked set and are awesome guys to match.

We flew into Wellington this morning for the show tonight and I’ve ducked down to an internet cafe, payed for half an hour to type this sucker out and it’s about to run out…so we’ll continue to update on our Facebook as things happen.

Welly, you’ve got one hell of a show coming your way tonight.

Until tomorrow!

Hey folks!

I’m going to use the term ‘snowed under’ in this entry. Please do not take this as a literal statement. I am not under any snow. In fact, I couldn’t tell you the last time I even saw snow. Retract that line. It was in 2001 on a school music trip to Wellington and we stopped on the desert road on the way home and threw snowballs at eachother. Memory, in the corner of my mind. I think that was the trip that I held hands with a girl. I was a smooth sailor back at school. Like the Fonz, but without the leather jacket, jeans, hairstyle and charisma. I did, however, constantly give the thumbs up…so…two and two.

This week has been intense! I’ve been snowed under (see above paragraph if you were worried) in every way imaginable. I work. I don’t talk about work, as work is work. I don’t like to bring my work home with me, thus in most instances when I’m making a blog entry, it doesn’t get brought up. However, if you need a guitar from 9-5…give me a call. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say n’more, say n’more. Hey, here’s an idea! Lets go over one of my days this week. Start to finish.

7am – Wake up to alarm clock. Hit snooze instantly.

7:09am – Wake up to alarm clock. Hit snooze instantly.

7:18am – Wake up to alarm clock. Hit snooze instantly.

7:27am – Wake up to alarm clock. Hit snooze instantly…or so I think! It’s about this time on the third run of snoozing, that I turn the alarm off instead and fall back into an awkward slumber.

7:44am – Feel the sharp sting of my cat clawing my face from the shelf next to my bed because she is hungry. Push her away and fall back to sleep.

7:45am – Angry cat = limb loss. So, I get out of bed grumpily, fill her food bowl noisily as though she might just realise how much of a nuisance her hunger is to me at this time in the morning…then slump back into bed with the annoying sound of her chomping away. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

9:20am – Jerk my head up and look at the clock, realising I am now half an hour late for work. In one movement, the blankets are pulled away and I’m upright on the floor, like magic. Pulling on whatever clothing can see littered on the floor, grabbing wet socks from the washing machine I make a mad bolt for the car and realise I have left all three of my essential items back down in my room. Wallet, keys, cellfone. I didn’t even do the ‘pat, pat, pat’ as I was leaving. Rookie.

9:31am – In the car, on the phone (naughty) to work telling them that there was an accident. People littered like dolls on the motorway – people standing on the road in tears throwing bananas at oncoming traffic as they were let go from their job without being given a gold watch.

9:45am – Sorry guys. Lets get to work.

We have reached the middle ground of my day where I won’t go into detail. Four words describe my day in its entirety. My. Dog. Has. Fleas.

5:30pm -Lock the shop doors and jump into the car.

5:31pm – Unlock the shop doors and retrieve my wallet and cellfone for the second time today.

5:32pm – Lock the shop doors and jump into the car.

5:33pm – Turn down the Ricky Gervais Podcast CD that I have had in my car for the past 3 years to a bearable level and then slowly, number by number bring it back up to its original volume as I get onto the motorway on my way to one of a number of after work activities that pop up every night.

5:55pm – Wipe the tears from my eyes after losing it after hearing one of the same jokes (from the Ricky Gervais Podcast Cd that i have had in my car for the past 3 years) I have heard a hundred times over. If you haven’t heard the podcasts before…go to iTunes and download them.

6:30pm – Arrive at my place of evening business. Let’s call it band practice for the sake of story.

6:31 – Realise I don’t have my key for the practice space so sit outside in the cold waiting for Chris to turn up to let me in.

6:34 – Throw my phone on the floor in dusgust as I can’t get past this particular Angry Birds level.

6:55 – Chris arrives, Gray in tow to let me into the space.

6:56 – Double over as the door is opened and that lovely practice space pong escapes. Soundproof room + four sweaty guys – any windows = Pong. Not the game. That would be cool though. We should set up a pong station in there.

7:00pm – Wonder where Brad is.

7:10pm – Wonder where Brad is.

7:11pm – There Brad is.

7:20pm – After having worked out the plan of attack for tonights practice…we get to it. At the moment, the bulk of our time in the practice space is working on the new tracks for the second album which has been heaps of fun. However from here on in, the focus will be on the upcoming tour and the Disturbed shows.

8:30pm – Break. We sit outside, have some water…tell some jokes. Maybe someone will fart. Who knows. It’s break time…anything could happen.

8:45pm – Damnit. I forgot about the smell.

9:50pm – Wrap up practice in one of two ways. 1. Hi fives all round as we have spent our time wisely and pro-actively and have come out the other end with something to show for it. 2. ‘Why can’t we be friends…why can’t we be friends?’

10:00pm – Turn down the Ricky Gervais Podcast CD that I have had in my car for the past 3 years to a bearable level and then slowly, number by number bring it back up to its original volume as I get onto the motorway on my way home.

10:28pm – Diverted off of the motorway due to roadworks onto a dodgy unknown side road. Driving behind a stream of traffic at 15km/h for the next 20 minutes following glowing arrows, burning like fire in the darkness…until finally, the light at the end of the tunnel…the motorway comes up in the distance. Huzzah! On the open road once again.

10:49pm – Diverted off of the motorway due to roadworks onto a dodgy unknown side road. =P

11:22pm – Pull into my driveway and turn off the engine. Sigh a big sigh of relief and walk inside to a pre-made, delicious dinner and a cat, perched angrily on my pillow. Which sucks because I’m allergic as and now her hair is all over my pillow. Killer.

3:02am – Finally drift to sleep after watching almost an entire season of The Office.

There we have it, a day in the life of Steve.

Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

This is me, signing off.

Peace and love.

Evening folks.

Just one of those weeks.

You know the ones. You know exactly ‘the ones’. ‘The ones’ where you get to the last few minutes of commitment left before you’re granted freedom…and just give up. ‘The ones’ where you look at your phone and think…”It’s only Tuesday!?!?”

You know the ones. You know exactly ‘the ones’.

The week started brightly. I was chipper, rolling about whistling a tune. Originally, the sentence just before this one read ‘strolling’ about. I looked back at it and thought that was incorrect, as I had spent most of the day driving in the car and did very little, if any, strolling. Looking back on what I have just written, I could (and probably should) have just not said (typed) anything at all and noone would have been any the wiser. I’m a pretty transparent guy. Anyway…I was in high spirits at the bright beginning of ‘the one’…then I had a car accident. Nothing serious, nothing major…no children killed. Just a little fender bender in an isolated area with no traffic, so we didn’t cause any disruptions. Nice. No. Not nice. Accidents still suck. Suck the big one. I shant go into the accident – as it isn’t cool enough a story…although I can add that it was directly outside of a lingerie store.

Speculate.

Just one of those days.

So that kind of started the snowball I guess. You know the snowball. You know exactly the ‘snowball’. Simple little things that wouldn’t normally bother you start getting to you. Losing your spoon in your cereal…forgetting where you put your keys…forgetting for the 5th day in a row to feed your cat…just little things. I think Good Charlotte wrote a song about it. All the Small Things or something. Then, before you know it. BOOM! The snowball is taking out your house and your neighbors houses. Deck chairs and garden gnomes are whizzing by at unimaginable speeds. The Johnson kids are being tossed around like rag dolls in the carnage. Then you wake up in a pool of your own sweat and realize you’ve neglected to do your blog.

I hope this entry isn’t coming across real dark and depressing. Lets get one thing straight. I’m not depressed. I don’t get depressed. Smiling is wicked and I do a lot of it.

So, I’ve been doing some thinking and I reckon from here on in I’m going to do these updates a little more randomly. Could be 4 times a day, could be 4 times a week. I would hate to see this turn into a really pointless “woke up, went to practice, came home, peace and love” kind of saga. This way, I can let things happen to me and come rushing into the room like an over excited kid brother and tell you about my day. My kid brother never did that…why not? We were friends. I’m going to ask him. Maybe.

We’ve got all of our gear setup in a smelly, sweaty little room at the moment…and know what? I’m feelin’ it dawg. I mean, now that I made the decision to bring a spare set of clothes. Honestly…it’s like going to soccer practice again. Everything in the room is dripping by the time we’re done. Is that a good thing? I’ll debate either way, but either way…it’s feeling good.

We’ve been running through a few of the new tracks solidly, breaking them down into little bits then putting them back together. There is one track in particular that is sounding awesome! Uncharted territory for us this new song. Heaps of new little tricks and licks that we haven’t really played with before. There’s a hoedown in the room each time we play it.

Dude…? How good is that new Foos track, ‘Rope’?

Really looking forward to tomorrow night. This is our first gig this year in Auckland. I think…right me if i’m wrong. It’s going to be a great run as well, all the bands on the bill are A-Grade. Its a balls to the wall rock lineup. We’re playing main support to Shotgun Alley who will be showing off their new singer, (psssssst) who through the grapevine may or may not have been a character on Home And Away. I went to school in Australia with a kid named Jason Smith. This kid grew up to play Robbie Hunter (thanks IMDB) on Home And Away. I hope to converse with Mark from Shotgun about this matter and share stories…because I have some good stories. See! Things in common already.

So, here we are…are you mad I was away? Did you miss me at all? Did you feed my cat?

The week that was is no more, and it’s gig night tomorrow! Can’t be upset about that now can we?!?!

Just one of those minutes…

I stubbed my toe.

See you when I see you!

This is me, signing off.

Peace and love.

Evening folks!

Tonight will be something a little different methinks. I’m not sure what time this will actually get online as I’m at a house warming party and not sure when I’ll actually get home. I’m not the driver tonight, so it will depend on when he strikes out.

So I figure, what I’m going to do tonight is update my evening line by line until I’m home.

– Someone just downed their drink and screamed ‘let’s get maggot!!’. Charming.
– We are now, for some reason hanging out in the bathroom. The acoustics in here are great.
– The topic of conversation is now whether or not the beam in the middle if the room is load bearing. It’s unanimous. It is not.
– Watching what could possibly be the strangest music video of all time. ‘Buttons’ by Sia. OSH would have had issues if this was shot here in NZ.
– Incense has officially been lit. This is now a party. Sandalwood if I’m not mistaken.
– A mosquito just landed on my forehead and flew away. No bite from what I can assess. Crisis averted.
– Oonce oonce oonce oonce oonce oonce oonce oonce……etc.
– Cheese + crackers = a classic. Wow, like vultures! I got a cracker. No cheese. Pickle as a substitute.
– ‘Seriously…dude. See The Chemical Brothers. Seriously…seriously…dude?’
– We are now dressing this guy up as the monopoly man. This is amazing. Why have I never done this before? The mustache didn’t come out nearly as awesome as initially thought. Still awesome…but could be awesomer.
– Having the best conversation about Mighty Ducks 2. Easily the top movie of the trilogy. The trickster from Texas was awesome. Quack, quack, quack!!!
– I’ve been leaning on this wall for too long. Time to venture to the couch. Made it here. The view is worse, I’m closer to the stereo blaring oonce oonce and the person sitting next to me is talking too loud. Wrong move. Back to the wall.
– Whoa…where did this dog come from?
– ‘Im not drunk!! I just haven’t eaten anything today…and I haven’t slept much…and it’s not my normal drink…and yeah.’ Nope.
– This girl just yelled out what could be the best line of the evening. ‘I hate it when my butt twitches.’. Me too random girl. Me too.
– It’s crump time. At least I think what I’m doing is crumping. It’s kind of like having a fit right? But upright…?
– Apparently Milo cereal is made from some kind of fortune telling wheat product. When you pour a bowl, it forms into the shape of something in your future…eg your first house, your third child…your next bowl of cereal. Nope.
– Someone has Absolutely Fabulous quotes as their ringtone.
– HOUSEWARMING!!!!! HOUSEWARMING!!!!!! Coolest chant I’ve been involved in since our ‘Treeby, Treeby, Treeby!’ chant last year.
– Whoa, where did this dog come from?

Ok…there we have it. Looks like were heading home. Drive sire! Onwards to my place of residence. I’m glad I could bring you guys on a journey through my night! I’ve got a ridiculously busy day tomorrow doing odds and ends all over the show. I’ll see you then!!!

This is me, signing off.

Peace and love.

Afternoon folks!

I spent a lot of last night driving around in the Stevemobile…it’s kind of like the Batmobile, but it isn’t black. It has the same gadgetry as the Batmobile. Including but certainly not limited to…flamethrowers, ‘bat-a-rangs’ (which are kind of like boomerangs…but more bat-like), shark repellent and a killer auxiliary input.

I do my singing in the car. I get a freshly baked disc of new tracks from Gray or one that I’ve done myself, pop it onto my iPodular device and go driving. I was working quite hard last night on two tracks in particular. One called ‘Dirty Bird’ and one called ’25 Years’. I’m a bit raw today…actually more husky than raw. Kind of like that Friends episode where Phoebe has the cold…and has a miraculously awesome blues voice. Actually…it’s nothing like that. I’m just husky.

Anyways…’25 Years’. Not in a long time have I had so much faith in a song. So much excitement. So many ideas of where we could go with the song in a production sense…and where it could go as a single. Its the kind of song that movie soundtracks are based around. I’m quietly confident that it will feature on the ‘Avengers’ OST. Anyone know anyone? Make some calls. Get a hold of Captain America and pull some strings. Even though noone has heard the song yet…i’ll vouch for it. My word is my bond.

‘Dirty Bird’ is a different story. I’m not struggling with this one…but I haven’t got anything that makes me want to run around with my arms flailing in the sky screaming ‘by Jove I think I’ve got it!’…not yet anyway. This song is probably one of the heaviest we’ve written in a while…and I think that’s where I’m tripping myself up. I’m burning out the pipes trying to be heavy…when all it really needs is a solid melody to carry it. There it is. Purely through writing these words out I have given myself the drive to figure the song out. See…i knew these blogs were a good idea.

It’s raining outside. My cat is likely wet. Suck to be her. BAH! I just realized that I parked my car ages away from where I’m typing this…so now I’M going to get wet! Damn you cat…you and your ‘what goes around comes around’ powers! She’s actually been quite nice since I got back from Aussie…I’ve only been bitten once and that was my fault. I walked past her in the hallway. My fault…

I’ve spent a majority of the day ogling guitar gear. Not that I have the money to spend it…but it’s OK to dream. I’m a telecaster man…but I’m being tempted by these new models from Ibanez. Drool. Man…gear is awesome. When I play live, I’m pretty meat and potatoes. I run my guitar straight into the amp (via a tuner of course) and that’s me. I rarely change channels…so no tap dancing for Steve. However…behind the stage…I’m an ambiance fanatic! Something that drives Chris NUTS!!! At practice I set up my delay pedals, even though I don’t use them…because if we have a few minutes break, or a slow moment…I’ll start noodling. Oh how I love to noodle. One part delay to two parts reverb. Add a dash of phaser and mix thoroughly. Now that is a recipe for a relaxing evening.

Okey dokey…the weather seems to be picking up so I’m going to make a mad bolt to my car and head home for the evening. I’m going to try and deal to ‘Dirty Bird’ while I’m driving.

Have an awesome night folks!

This is me, signing off.

Peace and love.
